For
Normal Cleaning of Laminates
Wipe the laminate with a dampened cloth or sponge, using a mild
soap or detergent. General purpose household cleaners, such as
Pine-Sol liquid cleaner are also effective. ABRASIVE CLEANERS
OR POWDERS SHOULD NOT BE USED. THEY CAN DAMAGE THE LAMINATE AND
MAKE IT SUSCEPTIVE TO STAINING.
Normal Household
Staining Problems
Plastic laminates resist normal household staining problems –
they shrug off children’s crayons and most spilled drinks. A
periodic application of a cleaner wax will help minimize
staining.
Food Stains.
Fruit drink, tea and coffee stains can be difficult to
remove, as are glass rings, water marks and fingerprints. A
thorough cleaning with a mild detergent or a household
cleaner and soft bristle is usually effective.
Ink Stains.
Felt marking pens and food pricing labels sometimes use
indelible inks that can be transferable onto a laminate
surface. To remove such stains, use a full strength
Pine-Sol liquid cleaner or household spray cleaner and allow
it to draw out the stain. Blot away with a damp cloth, then
rinse. Solvents such as denatured alcohol may also be used.
CAUTION: Most solvents are extremely flammable; keep away
from flame or electrical sparks and follow all directions on
the solvents container. Chlorine bleach may be used by
dampening a cloth sparingly and blotting onto the stained
area for no longer than a minute. Then, rinse thoroughly
with warm water.
Chemical Stains.
Plastic laminates resist many chemicals, including alcohol
and most cosmetics and drugs. Bluing, laundry bleaches or
hair dyes and rinses can cause permanent stains. Spills
should be wiped off immediately and the area rinsed
thoroughly.
Hot
Objects
The surfaces of laminate can withstand heat up to 275 degrees.
However, prolonged exposure to 140 degrees may result in
separation of the laminate from its core material. Care should
be taken with cookware as it comes bubbling from the oven or
burner at temperatures over 275 degrees. Keep a trivit or
insulated hot pad beneath the hot objects when placing them on
the counter top.
Scratches and Knocks
Plastic laminates resist scratches and will not crack or craze
with normal use. However, slicing can damage the surface. Use
you knives or other sharp implements on a chopping board rather
than the counter top. Never hammer on the counter top with hard
objects, especially at the edges. Heavy impact caused by
falling dishes or utensils can cause gouges in the surface. Use
lemon oil or kitchen wax on minor scratches to help hide them.
Seams
Avoid excess water at all seam areas. Wipe off water
immediately. Do not drain your dishes over the seams. Do not
place a rubbermaid type drain pad over a seam. This will cause a
seam delamination and separation and may void warranty.
